Participation of Students in the Community Service Program
The students of PG & Research Department of Zoology from Govt Arts College were involved in conserving the endangered species of trees at NBNP on 19 November 2021. They were given around 100 seeds of a few endangered species namely(Calophyllum inophyllum) Alexandrian laurel Peltophorum Pterocarpum (Yellow flame tree), Anona muricata (Sour Sop) and were asked to sow them in the nursery bags.
The students of the Botany Department from PSGR Krishnammal College for Women were involved in conserving the NBR species of trees at NBNP on 18 October 2023. They were given around 350 seeds of a few NBR species namely Calophyllum inophyllum (Alexandrian laurel), Peltophorum pterocarpum (Yellow flame tree), Anona muricata (Soursop), and Terminalia bellirica (Badam Tree) were asked to propagate in the nursery bags.
The UG students of the Department of Botany actively engage themselves in the service to the society by carrying out community activity. The basic reason is that the students gain professional experience. It also promotes personal growth and self esteem of the students who are involved in the activity. Some of the community services include recycling program, community garden, imparting knowledge and skills among school students, planting seedlings, blood donation camp, etc. As a part of their extension cum community activity, the students of II and I B.Sc. Botany along with the faculty members involved in the conservation of endangered plants at Nilgiri Biosphere Nature Park, Anaikatty. During the activity, the students sowed about 1000 seeds of endangered plants namely Diospyros malabarica, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Anona muricata and Calophyllum inophyllum. The students have done this activity to increase the population of the endangered plants in the forest area of Nilgiri Biosphere Nature Park, Anaikatty.
The students actively participated in the propagation of seedling raising. This program helped the participants in indulging themselves in raising a nursery which will also support them as a life skill for their future. The activity also helps to create awareness among the current generation on how to preserve and conserve the endangered species of our land and the importance of having a green and safe environment.
